Dallas Design District’s Ascension is more than a coffee shop

Ascension Coffee Shop

There’s been a slew of coffee shops opened in the last eighteen months in Dallas but Ascension stands out from the rest. However, it took me a little while to figure out why this Design District coffee shop keeps us going back for breakfast, lunch, dinner (many dinners!) date night drinks and Sunday brunch. It’s more than a coffee shop, it’s a cafe. Unlike most coffee places, the food isn’t prepackaged in a counter for you to take. Ascension takes it further with an in staff sommelier on hand to recommend wines with your cheese platter.

There’s a pretty healthy lunch crowd on weekdays. Designers often having lunch with clients while showing them plans and samples. Or hipsters all set up with their cortados and Macs. So to avoid waits, we usually go either for an early dinner or on weekends. Though even the Sunday brunches are pretty packed at 11am with people lining up for those bacon and leek fritatas and the salmon plate!

The menu is simple. Paninis and salads for lunch. I’m addicted with their Spanish albacore salad tossed with tuna, egg, cornichons on a bed of fresh salad.

The kids like the artisanal cheese plate that includes an assortment of salami, cheeses and jams (fig, tomato and honey).

The paninis and salads are also available at dinner with the addition of hot entrees. The cast iron skillet salmon is a staple for Pikelet while Lollo likes the Airline chicken breast. The full flavored tender lamb meatballs and spicy shrimp Mozambique are what Beefcake and I order but too spicy for the kids.

But we always have room for the fantastic desserts and we’ve had them all… Orange cardamom creme brulee, chocolate cake and the bread pudding always finds their way to our table. Two or three desserts are plenty for our family of five.

All this and I haven’t even started talking about the coffee! I’m a simple coffee drinker. A decaf latte will suffice and each time, the lattes come out smooth and beautifully presented. Sometimes, if owner and fellow Aussie,  Russell Hayward is there, he’ll fix me an Australian iced coffee which, by the way does not contain ice but is cold coffee served with milk and lashings of ice cream and cream. Yum! But they do serve the whole gamut of coffee drinks.  The staff are obsessed with the whole process of making a good cup of Joe from espresso to a cortado to a frappe. But the IttyBittyFoodies couldn’t care less, they ask to go to Ascension simply for the food!
