This is almost a public service announcement. I've finally found a place that has proper knife sharpening in DFW. I bought a set of Zwilling J. A. Henckels knives after we got married and have really tried to keep them in good condition. They're expensive but we picked them because they always fare well in reviews. They're top quality knives forged from single pieces of steel. Every year, I take the Henckels to a kitchenware store to get them done but I've never been 100% happy with the results. Thinking back, part of the reason is that they knife sharpening is done on a generic machine. Sometimes we've come home and the blade doesn't seem even. I've even tried to do it myself at home but it's never sharp enough which is why I'm ecstatic to find a local place right here in DFW.
This year, my kids are getting a TON of presents under the Christmas tree. I'm so excited, just look at the great big pile! There's 8 Nerf Guns (because one for each child just isn't enough), two Sphero SPRK + STEAM education robots (yep... one for each of the older boys), Lego Mindstorms (because my oldest has been pining and asking for this since he was 4 years old), a rock tumbler and crystal growing set (for my budding geologist/gemologist), Circuit Scribe Kit (for my budding engineer), Pokemon cards (about 600 of them total but who is counting) and Basketball cards (just shy of 300 cards I believe). I can't wait to see their surprised little faces when they open them all up and find that these are their old Christmas toys from previous years.
America you have chosen! I won't comment on political views but I'm so relieved the election is finally over. I'm done with choosing one over another and am happy instead to announce that Chooze is back with a pop up store for holiday shopping! For those who don't know, you don't have to choose sides with Chooze shoes. The right shoe is harmoniously different from the left shoe but both are united in step and design. I wish that kind of unity for our country too as we move forward.
The annual Texas Veggie Fair is one of our favorite fall festivals. The annual event returns to Reverchon Park on Saturday October 22. I love it because it doesn't drain my wallet, fill my children up with sugar and give them a bad case of the "Gimme Gimme" as they ogle all the rides and useless soft toys. Texas Veggie Fair is different. It feels more lovey and less grabby. We go and play good old fashion carnival games, eat a few meatless items and then sing kumbaya while giving everyone free hugs. Ok not exactly but vegan singer Erykah Badu did let the kids come on stage with her one year while she was performing. We leave having learned a few things about healthy green living, animal welfare and inspired to cook more with vegetables. This is Texas' largest celebration of all things veggie!
After weeks of anticipation, the most sought after secret event, Le Dîner en Blanc finally arrived. Pedestrians walking near the Dallas City Hall last Friday evening, stood agape to witness an intriguing scene unfold. Busloads of people clad in pristine white, holding white tables and chairs and baskets of food started arriving at the Dallas City Hall. 2300 people transformed the dull concrete courtyard of the Dallas City Hall into an ethereal procession of picnicking angels. Welcome to the second Annual Le Dîner en Blanc!
Just watched the trailer to Bad Moms and I nearly spat out my tea from laughter. Starring one of my fave gals, Mila Kunis who plays Amy Mitchell, a mother of two kids with a seemingly perfect life till she catches her husband having an online affair. Things go awry and stress levels are amped up after Amy throws him out of the house and becomes a single parent trying to juggle everything from kids... Read More
The first time we heard about Tom Douglas was in 2002 when we lived in Seattle. At that time, Douglas only had a few restaurants like Dahlia Lounge, now a Seattle institution for Pacific Northwest cuisine which also earned Douglas the Best Chef in the Northwest Award by James Beard Foundation and Etta’s, a laid back seafood restaurant by Seattle’s Waterfront by Pike Place Market. We loved his fresh and seasonal approach to food before... Read More
