The secrecy of Le Dîner en Blanc?
I’m looking for a white outfit for the upcoming Le Dîner en Blanc event on October 6th, 2017. What is Dîner en Blanc? Most people have never heard of exclusive soiree because it’s the city’s kept secret. It’s a little like Fight Club, you’ll have to find a way to get an invitation to attend but without the violence of course. And you know what the first rule of Fight Club is? The first rule of Fight Club is that you never talk about Fight Club. It’s the same with Dîner en Blanc.
“Dallas has been so wonderful about keeping the secret and understanding that the secret is a huge part of the fun of Diner en Blanc!” says Rachael Kissel, co-host of Le Dîner en Blanc – Dallas. “We have loved seeing the diverse crowd each year and can’t wait to provide another magical evening for the city we love so much.” Of course, it’s all hush hush until you snag yourself one of the hottest tickets in town and then you’re boasting about it all over social media right?
All about Le Diner en Blanc
Dîner en Blanc as the name suggests is an all-white-themed dinner party which began in Paris nearly 30 years ago when founder, Francois Pasquier wanted to assemble a picnic with friends. He encouraged his friends to invite theirs and to enable everyone to recognize each other, he asked everyone to dress in white. The event in Paris now holds about 10,000 attendees and Dîner en Blanc events spans all over the world, including Dallas which is in it’s third year.
The idea is to gather with friends over a meal and commune. Guests are given a meeting location where they board a bus and the final destination point is revealed at the last minute. It’s a spectacular scene watching 2400 guests arrive wearing all white outfits and setting up their tables and decorations for the night. Dallasites can choose to prepare their own gourmet picnic or purchase from the official caterer through the website. To kick off the event, the guests in unison waves their signature Southwest Airline white napkin transforming the entire scene into a flock of angels waiting to take flight.
Here’s a recap of last year’s Diner En Blanc event, plus details on how to get your name on the list for next year’s Dîner en Blanc. People still stop and ask me about my Anthropologie top and fascinator I wore to last year’s event.
What would Chanel do?
So now to my outfit dilemma. Whoever invented the ‘No white after Labor Day’ rule doesn’t know what they are missing. It seems that the rule started trending in the late 19th century for the old money socialites to distance themselves from the pedestrian new money crowd. And when Labor Day became an official federal holiday in 1894, it seemed to be the natural cut off date to store away your summer whites. By the 1950s, the middle class embraced the trend of white only from Memorial Day to Labor Day. But why? Why deprive yourselves of glorious winter whites because of a fashion ‘rule’ put in place over a century ago? I’m simply too much in love with the color to care and after a bit of online research, it seems the my greatest fashion inspiration, Coco Chanel couldn’t give a hoot either all those years ago. So if Coco can do it, will you dare? Just check out Chanel’s current Fall/Winter Collection in glorious whites and see that the brand remains fearlessly rebellious.
Here’s a few looks I’ve picked out for the evening.
The Romance of White
The above three dresses come from Anthropologie. I love the lace and feminine details on all three! The Place Nationale Antipolis Lace Dress is my favorite out of the three so far and it’s got a French name.
Show some leg!
I didn’t think of looking for a romper but the Alexis from Intermix with it’s ruffles and lace makes the look so pretty and still let you do some incredible dance moves during the night! As I shop, I must give a silent word of thanks to these haughty social ladies for these summer dresses are now on sale!
Simple but a little different
Love these very simple and silhouetted lines but each with it’s unique design like a cut out here or an asymmetrical neckline.
Shoes glorious shoes!
While the Stella McCartney booties are everything… the price *gasp* is a hindrance for many of us. Steve Madden (which is incidentally having a sale right now!) makes a good solid white bootie and the Jeffrey Campbell ones with the peek-a-boo toes are so sexy. Pair any of these booties with a mini dress and these boots can carry you through the winter season under a pair of jeans.
Please tell me your favorite dress or pair of shoes below! I’d love to know!
*I am a ShopStyle Collective Affiliate. All opinions are my own. I was not given any of these clothes but if anyone wants to send them to me please email!
Style Surfing: Before I had my Itty Bitty Foodies, I had Style Surfers a website about all things fashionable and fabulous. This was in another galaxy far far away when I was the single girl about town. Fashion was my first love and this new Style Surfing segment is an ode to that. Enjoy.
