WANTED: A nice family night out with great food, drinks and fun. That’s exactly what we got when we dined Outlaw Taproom, the casual bar restaurant that opened in last month at the Four Seasons Resort and Club Dallas at Las Colinas. Outlaw Taproom is the naughty sibling to the elegant, signature LAW Restaurant at the Four Seasons Dallas. It reminds me a little of my less well behaved second child, Lollo who is now 9 years old. While LAW restaurant is classy and more subdued, Outlaw Taproom shows off its wilder ways.

Wild men and women of Texas music like Willy Nelson, Janis Joplin, ZZ Top and Stevie Ray Vaughn are featured at Outlaw Taproom

The rugged decor by Looney & Associates, features a curated collection of evocative photographs that depict the essence of Texas musicians like Willy Nelson, Janis Joplin and ZZ Top, as well as wall-mounted images of guitars.

The bar’s color palette boasts shades of smoky taupe, walnut and espresso wood tones.  Weathered black and tan leather furniture in the lounge area adorned by jewel-toned fabric pillows leaves diners comfortable while leafing through pages of books about Texas music that sit on the coffee tables.

Drinks & Play

The kids, noticed none of this but their eyes lit up as soon as they saw the shuffleboard and pool table at the end of the bar. Perfect! This is the kind of family night out we like. The kids can occupy themselves for a little bit while Beefcake and I ease into the dinner details over cocktails. His choice, a Hot Kickin’ Texas Bucks, Outlaw Taproom’s version of a Moscow Mule made with local vodka company Titos, Fever Tree Ginger Beer, lime, mint and spiced up with chilies. Mine was a ladylike Peggy Sue(sana) margarita made with Texas grapefruit.

But whether you decide to sit inside or out on the patio, there’s games for the kids to play. We love the bocce ball on the enormous patio which leaves families some leisurely game and nosh time.

First order of the day was the much talked about Truffle Queso Fundido. This is no regular queso. The dish elevated with aromatic truffle cheese with an added Texas twist of herb grits and topped with a soft, poached egg. The kids, even non-cheese-eating Pikelet, sopped it all up with crostinis. Deviled eggs flecked with jumbo lump blue crab also pleased my picky crowd even though one only wanted the egg part and the other wanted the crab. My personal favorite was the shrimp cocktail. Succulent, plump shrimp submerged in a yin and yang cocktail sauce balanced with wasabi, avocado mousse. Next time we go, we’re ordering the Venison Corn Dogs which looks so fun!

Eleven year old, Pikelet chose mussels in a garlic, white wine cream sauce for dinner.  Lollo opted for the Outlaw Burger. While his palate doesn’t extend as far as my other two, my Lollo does like quality ingredients and chowed down on the Akaushi beef burger. My husband also enjoyed the burger especially with the added bacon, gruyere and tomato jam. As for Googie, he shared the steak and fries with mama. The piece of akaushi sirloin came out tender and pink accompanied by truffle fries and a sundried tomato chimichurri sauce for dipping.

The Four Seasons are famous for their outdoor S’mores nights but at Outlaw Taproom, the dessert is fired up tableside.

More dipping ensued when our crisp, puffy churro bites arrived with chocolate and caramel sauces. We couldn’t pass up the S’mores dessert. The marshmallows were browned to taste by our server wielding a cooking blow torch and then expertly squished in between chocolate slices and Graham crackers.

The meal ended with a spectacular nightcap for the kids. The Tub, usually a sharing cocktail made of rum, lime, ginger and basil was converted into hot chocolate. The miniature bathtub made it’s way to our table with luscious hot chocolate, chock full of mini marshmallows complete with rubber duckies and three straws. Sure it was way past their bed time to have all that sugar but hey… we were outlaws that night and rules were made to be broken.

Tip: Outlaw Taproom turns into a bar after 9pm, so it’s time to take the kids home.

Till our next Happy Meal!
