Knife Sharpening

This is almost a public service announcement. I’ve finally found a place that has proper knife sharpening in DFW. I bought a set of Zwilling J. A. Henckels knives after we got married and have really tried to keep them in good condition. The knives are expensive but we picked them because they always fare well in reviews. Henckels are top quality knives forged from single pieces of steel. Every year, I take the Henckels to a kitchenware store to get them sharpened but I’ve never been 100% happy with the results. Thinking back, part of the reason is that the knife sharpening is done on a generic machine. Sometimes we’ve come home and the blade doesn’t seem even. I’ve even tried to do it myself at home but it’s never sharp enough which is why I’m ecstatic to find Cutlery Collection at The Shops at Willowbend.

BLADE RUNNER

It’s a little shop that reminds me a little of a locksmith but instead of locks and keys, there are knives on every wall from pocket knives to fishing knives. There’s some serious blades there!! The process couldn’t be easier. The knife sharpening is done old-school style by hand. That way the artisan can judge what is needed especially since mine had become a little warped.

MAKE IT A GIRLFRIEND DAY

Here’s my little tip, go with a friend and organize to have lunch or coffee with her while your knives are being sharpened. My friend, Stephanie Magilow, co-founder of Jammit! Jam came along with her set of knives. We spent a lovely hour catching up at Mariposa, the restaurant on the 3rd floor at Neiman Marcus. A little break during the day makes such a big difference and instead of going somewhere with internet access to work while waiting, having a few laughs over one of NM’s iconic popovers really pepped up the day.

“My knives are so sharp, I love it! Thank you for going with me to get them sharpened. So glad I didn’t take them somewhere to get ruined.”

After an hour, we picked up our knives. They charged me just under $10 for three kitchen knives (40 cents an inch) which is about the same as what the other kitchenware store charged except now we have outstanding results! The guy made fun of me saying that the back side of my knives were sharper than the blade. I was thrilled to see how sharp they were! Cutlery Collection was like a spa for knives and they came out completely rejuvenated, almost like new. Having sharper knives makes cooking so much nicer but be careful not to cut yourself. Afterwards, Stephanie sent me a note saying “My knives are so sharp, I love it! Thank you for going with me to get them sharpened. So glad I didn’t take them somewhere to get ruined.”

I hope you get the same experience when you go. Please comment below if there are other artisanal knife sharpening services you’ve found! I’d love to start a list!! And if you know others looking for a knife sharpening service in DFW, please share our post!

Till our next Happy Meal!
