Summer months are tomato season. Whether you’re buying from your local farmers market or at the store, this is the time to enjoy this summer fruit. Botanically, tomatoes are fruits because it contains seeds of the plants. Vegetables are edible parts of the plant but in cooking, most of us see tomatoes are vegetables as they are used in savory dishes. This weekend, our kids made Caprese Lollipops armed with a basket of mini heirloom tomatoes, fresh basil leaves from our garden and a mozzarella ball. The recipe is easy like summer should be and our kids will feel great because they made the family meal.

Cherry tomatoes or mini heirloom tomatoes

1 ball mozzarella, diced

bunch of basil leaves

Extra virgin olive oil for drizzling

Balsamic if needed

Salt and pepper if needed

Using the toothpicks, thread one tomato, one basil leaf and a cube of mozzarella. Arrange on a platter and drizzle with olive oil. If you like balsamic, add that. Salt and pepper is optional. We suggest serving it with some sliced baguette and have a dipping bowl of EVOO and balsamic vinegar.

  1. Oh my goodness, what a brilliant idea! My daughter is too young to be making something like this (she’s only 24 weeks, after all!), but I’m totally saving this for when she’s able to make these with me. And enjoy them with me. Because I love me a good, simple snack that celebrates the season’s ingredients, too!
