Grilled bananas you ask? We’ve all eaten cooked bananas in desserts like Bananas Foster or banana cake but until recently I never thought of grilling bananas. This recipe is from my grill-extraordinaire husband who made this when he was growing up. It’s great for camping trips or summer cookouts. With just two ingredients, grilled bananas with chocolate is simple and quick. We let our Itty Bitty Foodies choose their favorite chocolate bar and then they make their own. With all the cooking out we’re doing during summer, this grilled bananas with chocolate is a no-brainer recipe. Just throw them on the ‘barbie’. Here’s what you need:
Bananas (allow one for every person)
Chocolate (choose your favorite chocolate bar and break into squares)
Lay bananas flat. This is perhaps the most important step as they need to sit flat on the grill. Then using a butter knife (we get the kids to do this) cut a small slit, about 1 cm wide along the curve. Break up your chocolate bar into squares and stuff them into the slit. Place on the grill, till the chocolate melts, about 6 minutes or so. I like my banana just warmed with melted chocolate but you can cook them longer so that the bananas are soft. The banana skin will blacken but inside, the flesh is still yellow and warm. When they are done, scoop out with a spoon and eat! So easy.
Variation: add marshmallows or a scoop of ice cream.
Our recipes are designed for the modern parent who are time poor but like to eat well. We try to incorporate the children in the cooking process because it’s a great life skill and we feel if children have ownership in the meal, they are more likely to eat it or at least try new things. Check out our easy recipes section that has you in and out of the kitchen in 30 minutes or less and please… if you know of a parent who loves fast and fancy meals, please share our blog.
