We take our kids; Pikelet, Lollo and Googie everywhere whenever we go out to eat. And when I tell people that the little munchkins eat everything from sashimi to lamb chops to lentils, they’re astounded. For one, I love eating and I’d like my children to share my passion. As soon as they could eat solids, I was pureeing filet mignon with truffled mashed potatoes for their little taste buds. And secondly, I’m a freelance food and lifestyle journalist (see my portfolio) and recipe tester, so it forces us all to eat adventurously.
We’re lucky to live in Dallas where there is an incredible smorgasbord of restaurants to choose from and I’ve found that nearly every restaurant has something to offer children. I’m not talking about the dreaded Children’s Menu with the ubiquitous ‘chicken nuggets, mac & cheese and cheese pizza’. Our children are just like us, only itty bitty. They are armed with all the same senses so why not start their culinary journey early.
Pikelet at the age of 4 was able to order his own sashimi. He can tell you if he fancies tom yum goong or a tom kah gai for dinner and he knows that if he behaves, there’ll be slices of Scottish smoked salmon waiting for him as a reward.
Lollo’s at 2 years old, could tell me he wanted to eat at Si Tapas restaurant on a weekly basis. He’s my less adventurous one so we often have to enforce “The No Thank You Bite” which works. Lollo loves nature, eggs and turtles.
In 2012, we welcomed our third boy, Googie! Googie is our wonderful sweet surprise. He loves olives, capers and dumplings! The big brothers named him ‘Googie’ because they saw an ultrasound of him in his ‘egg sack’ when I was pregnant. And one of them said, “like a googie egg’ and the name stuck.
Why the funny names? Sans my own, I’ve chosen not to use their real names nor publish their faces on the blog.
‘Pikelet’ is an affectionate name that many Australians use for children; like ‘munchkin’ or ‘sweetie pie’. A ‘pikelet’ is also an Australian term for a small and thick pancake. Lollo, got his nickname from his favorite fruit: the blueberry or as he called them when he just started talking, ‘lollos’.
Coincidentally, the food related nicknames seemed to fit this foodie blog, as did my husband’s moniker – Beefcake. My husband, I’ve affectionately dubbed Beefcake, a term he garnered during our dating days. My Beefcake is my muse. I’m eternally grateful for his love, support & seemingly endless patience for all my crazy late night ideas! Without him, I’m unable to write.
