Healthy Plant-based meals to go from Nature’s Plate

How did the back-to-school week go for you? We've had a trying time getting back to our 'school night hours'. Thankfully homework hasn't started yet for my older boys. That's next week's battle. For now,  we are trying to conquer breakfasts in a timely manner and getting back into the lunch schedule. Recently, we discovered Nature's Plate, a locally-owned store with plant-based meals to go which has been helpful. We're not vegetarians but we like having some inventive ways to add plant-based dishes to our meals.

Kabuki Japanese Restaurant, Galleria Dallas

I feel like a mall rat at The Galleria Dallas, lately. We're actually not there to shop but eat at Kabuki Japanese Restaurant.  Kabuki Japanese, the latest restaurant to open up at the Galleria Dallas has become a fast family favorite because of the vast menu. There's sushi, noodles, rolls, rice bowls to bento boxes so it suits all three of my IttyBittyFoodies and their food quirks. Kabuki Japanese even offers gluten-free options for my paleo friends, lots of veggie dishes for vegetarians and a huge bar for my drinking buddies. The clean, modern designs makes not-so-cool mommies like me feel like we're hip. It can double as a date night place or a nice outing with girlfriends. The restaurant is also spacious so it accommodates meals with multiple families while booths keeps things intimate for a party of two. Yep... Kabuki Japanese is that one-size-fits-all restaurant.

Family Days at The Samurai Collection

Our weekend soared to new heights as IttyBittyFoodies hosted Kodomo no Hi, Japanese Children's Day at the Ann and Gabriel Barbier-Mueller Museum: The Samurai Collection. The collection located at Harwood District features Family Days on the first Saturday of each month. In samurai times, Children's Day commemorated a samurai's coming of age. Today, Kodomo no Hi is Japanese national holiday. The day honors growth and happiness of all children and is often spent flying Koinobori, or carp-shaped kites. According to a Chinese legend which tells of a carp who swims upstream and transforms into a dragon, the carp is a symbol of strength and success. We spent the day making our own carp kites and flying kites at the Rockefeller Gardens located on the 12th floor of Harwood International. What a spectacle it was to fly kites against a backdrop of skyscrapers. Click to view our fun Kodomo no Hi video highlights!

Knife Sharpening

This is almost a public service announcement. I've finally found a place that has proper knife sharpening in DFW. I bought a set of Zwilling J. A. Henckels knives after we got married and have really tried to keep them in good condition. They're expensive but we picked them because they always fare well in reviews. They're top quality knives forged from single pieces of steel. Every year, I take the Henckels to a kitchenware store to get them done but I've never been 100% happy with the results. Thinking back, part of the reason is that they knife sharpening is done on a generic machine. Sometimes we've come home and the blade doesn't seem even. I've even tried to do it myself at home but it's never sharp enough which is why I'm ecstatic to find a local place right here in DFW.

Playful eating at Outlaw Taproom

WANTED: A nice family night out with great food and fun. That's exactly what we got when we dined Outlaw Taproom, the casual bar restaurant that opened in March at the Four Seasons Resort and Club Dallas at Las Colinas. Outlaw Taproom is the naughty sibling to the elegant, signature LAW Restaurant at the Four Seasons Dallas. It reminds me a little of my less well behaved second child, Lollo who is now 9 years old. While LAW restaurant is classy and more subdued, Outlaw Taproom shows off its wilder ways.

Plano Getaway

Is it my imagination or has the City of Plano mushroomed with activity in the last few years? We find ourselves driving the thirty minutes out regularly to visit festivals, grab a bite to eat or hang out at my favorite spa. Recently, we partnered with Visit Plano for a staycation to get a glimpse of what else Plano has to offer. We found a New York Loft hotel, wine-country inspired cuisine, artisan stores and Prairie-land trails for hiking. What a treat Plano is for a short getaway!

Where to eat in Fort Worth with kids

It's no secret that Fort Worth is one of our favorite quick getaway spots for a long weekend (check out this downtown Fort Worth hotel we stayed at). The more we go,we love Fort Worth. And it always surprises us that it's a short thirty minute drive from Dallas. The burgeoning restaurant scene leaves us yearning for the next visit. To make the most of our getaway, we sandwich in a brunch and an early dinner with a trip to a museum. We've snooped about and listed some of our favorite kid-friendly eateries in Fort Worth:

DoorDash helps families do the legwork at meal times

Happy Birthday DoorDash! The food delivery service turns one in Dallas and is now expanding into areas like Fort Worth and Arlington. Recently DoorDash invited IttyBittyFoodies to try their service and we jumped up and down at the thought of having a hot meal all prepared for us. If your household is anything like mine, the time leading up to family meal times are always a little like driving in Asia on the wrong side of the road without a road map for us. Three rambunctious boys turn into Gremlins around 4pm and somehow we muddle through to get dinner on the table. It's one of the reasons why IttyBittyFoodies recipes are designed to get you in and out of the kitchen in thirty minutes or less. However, our first DoorDash experience did not go as expected. For full disclosure, DoorDash provided us with a meal up to $50, all opinions are my own (as always) so read on to see hear this tale of two DoorDash deliveries.

Meatball recipe by Kenny’s Italian Kitchen

Today is National Meatball Day and to celebrate, Chef Kenny Bowers of Kenny's Italian Kitchen is sharing his Kenny's Midnight Meatballs recipe with Itty Bitty Foodies. The recipe aptly named after he spent many a night making meatballs till midnight after work as a way to relax. And to show his meatball love to customers, every Sunday as well as National Meatball Day, Kenny's Italian Kitchen offers $1 for an order of Kenny's 1/4 lb meatballs. A deal like that makes Sunday family suppers at the Italian-American eatery doubly delicious. Read on for the secrets to his meatball recipe.

Cheddars Scratch Kitchen Review

It's been a busy couple of months for us after the holidays and then getting straight back into the swing of school and activities. Last week, my husband went away on not one but two conferences. It kind of tipped the scale of chaos for me to juggle the three boys, separate after-school activities, dinner and bedtime routine. So we trotted off to Cheddars Scratch Kitchen for dinner to give ourselves a break. I must admit, I've always lumped the Cheddars chain with Applebees and Chili's. However, since they've started rebranding with a fresher, scratch-made approach to cooking, Itty Bitty Foodies were pleasantly surprised. So surprised that we brought Daddy there the next week when he got back from his conferences.

The Lot in Lakewood is kid-friendly but the food… meh

I've always wanted to love The Lot in Lakewood. I really do. It's taken me so long to write about it because we've never enjoyed the food. But recently a few things have changed our minds and I call it the "All-Inclusive-Resort-mentality". Years ago, when we didn't have children, my husband and I vowed never go to one of those all-inclusive resorts. Why would anyone want to be trapped in one resort? Now with three active boys, our perspectives on what's important has changed. Dramatically. When our second son was old enough to go into a kids club, we went to an all-inclusive in Cancun and our eyes were opened to the merits of the previously dreaded tourist trap. We 'get it' now. The Lot in Lakewood rocks.

Ida Claire : Southern food in Addison

Ida Claire restaurant enters the noisy Addison restaurant corridor like a genteel Southern belle. This Southern style gastropub couldn't be more different from her brash neighbors. Inside, a whimsical world awaits as if your eccentric Southern aunty had her hand decorating it. Harmonious to the decor, the food lends itself to the South and in Ida Claire style, the dishes are bursting with lots of character. With most dishes under $18 with the exception of the Wagyu Sirloin steak ($26), this price point makes Ida Claire much more enticing than her Dallas counterparts in town.

Super Chix

Cluck! Cluck! There's a new top chook in town and Super Chix has us clucking for more! Dallas has an insatiable appetite for fried chicken. Every time a new fried chicken place opens, it's packed. When we're at the mall, the lines at Chick-Fil-A snake around at all hours while the adjoining businesses trickle with customers. And I have to admit, fried chicken is also my fast food weakness so I couldn't help myself when the new Super Chix opened in Addison. We just had to go.

CiboDivino MarketPlace and Caffé

In a previous post, Napa Valley with Kids, we raved about a wonderful marketplace called Oakville Grocery store and just as we get back to Dallas, we discovered the newly opened CiboDivino Marketplace and Caffé! Owners Daniele Puleo (of Daniele Osteria on Oaklawn and Inzo Italian Kitchen) and his wife, Christina, have recreated a similar gourmet experience paying special tribute to Daniele's Italian Sicilian background. But in true Texas style where everything is bigger, the Italian eatery, marketplace and bar designed by Ron Guest is a spacious 4,400 square foot including an additional 2,200 square foot patio and a wonderful green lawn space for outdoor picnicking at Sylvan Thirty in Oak Cliff.

Underground Indian Cuisine in Irving

Beefcake and I love Indian food especially when we lived in Singapore. We'd go to hawker stalls and gorge on roti and hot curries served on a banana leaf instead of plates. But since moving to Dallas, we'd not ventured too much into the cuisine especially after having the kids. But slowly we've found some authentic places and they seem to be clustered around the Irving/Las Colinas areas. Underground Indian Cuisine is one of them. They serve Pershawri Indian cuisine from the Northern region which tends to be less spicy. It's a great way to introduce the children to Indian cuisine
