What families should know about the Kusama exhibit

We have fallen for the new 'gourd-geous' Kusama exhibit at the Dallas Museum of Art. "All the eternal love I have for the pumpkins" is a truly unique and magical experience. However, there's so many rules to follow in order to view it. I thought I would put a list together of all the things families should know before visiting. It would help manage expectations so that you get the most out of this fascinating avant-garde art exhibit. It's truly a spectacle to be enjoyed.

Getting ready for Le Dîner en Blanc

I'm looking for a white outfit for the upcoming Le Dîner en Blanc event on October 7th, 2017. What is Dîner en Blanc? Most people have never heard of exclusive soiree because it's the city's kept secret. It's a little like Fight Club, you'll have to find a way to get an invitation to attend but without the violence of course. And you know what the first rule of Fight Club is?  The first rule of Fight Club is that you never talk about Fight Club. It's the same with Dîner en Blanc.

10 reasons to staycay at Four Seasons Dallas

Staycations are perfect in the second half of summer. It is that time of summer when you feel time has whizzed by too fast. Wasn't it only just May? And with another impending school year just weeks away, we recommend a late summer getaway at Four Seasons Resort and Club Dallas* in Las Colinas. "Are we going on a long road trip?" my littles ask. The kids are pleasantly surprised that our 'road trip' ended in just thirty minutes. That's the beauty of vacationing at the Four Seasons Dallas; it feels far enough to be away somewhere without the pangs of travel time. But the Four Seasons is in more than the hotel business, they're in the business of making memories for the whole family. Our latest YouTube Video of our weekend staycation says it all. If you need more reasons to visit, here are our top ten reasons why IttyBittyFoodies love vacations at the Four Seasons Dallas.

Party Idea: Team Building with Taste

Have you always wanted to be on Master Chef or Chopped? Last week, I got a taste of cooking show stardom at Team Building with Taste with my DFW Bloggers group. Located in North Dallas at Frankford and Preston, this team building facility was full of fun, excitement and food! The mission is to put together a dish, cook it, plate it, then present it before a panel of judges with a team of people in an hour. Are you ready for the challenge?

Family Days at The Samurai Collection

Our weekend soared to new heights as IttyBittyFoodies hosted Kodomo no Hi, Japanese Children's Day at the Ann and Gabriel Barbier-Mueller Museum: The Samurai Collection. The collection located at Harwood District features Family Days on the first Saturday of each month. In samurai times, Children's Day commemorated a samurai's coming of age. Today, Kodomo no Hi is Japanese national holiday. The day honors growth and happiness of all children and is often spent flying Koinobori, or carp-shaped kites. According to a Chinese legend which tells of a carp who swims upstream and transforms into a dragon, the carp is a symbol of strength and success. We spent the day making our own carp kites and flying kites at the Rockefeller Gardens located on the 12th floor of Harwood International. What a spectacle it was to fly kites against a backdrop of skyscrapers. Click to view our fun Kodomo no Hi video highlights!

Knife Sharpening

This is almost a public service announcement. I've finally found a place that has proper knife sharpening in DFW. I bought a set of Zwilling J. A. Henckels knives after we got married and have really tried to keep them in good condition. They're expensive but we picked them because they always fare well in reviews. They're top quality knives forged from single pieces of steel. Every year, I take the Henckels to a kitchenware store to get them done but I've never been 100% happy with the results. Thinking back, part of the reason is that they knife sharpening is done on a generic machine. Sometimes we've come home and the blade doesn't seem even. I've even tried to do it myself at home but it's never sharp enough which is why I'm ecstatic to find a local place right here in DFW.

Why I’m giving my kids their old Christmas toys for Christmas…

This year, my kids are getting a TON of presents under the Christmas tree. I'm so excited, just look at the great big pile! There's 8 Nerf Guns (because one for each child just isn't enough), two Sphero SPRK + STEAM education robots (yep... one for each of the older boys), Lego Mindstorms (because my oldest has been pining and asking for this since he was 4 years old), a rock tumbler and crystal growing set (for my budding geologist/gemologist), Circuit Scribe Kit (for my budding engineer), Pokemon cards (about 600 of them total but who is counting) and Basketball cards (just shy of 300 cards I believe). I can't wait to see their surprised little faces when they open them all up and find that these are their old Christmas toys from previous years.

Chooze Pop Up Shop for holiday shopping

America you have chosen! I won't comment on political views but I'm so relieved the election is finally over. I'm done with choosing one over another and am happy instead to announce that Chooze is back with a pop up store for holiday shopping! For those who don't know, you don't have to choose sides with Chooze shoes. The right shoe is harmoniously different from the left shoe but both are united in step and design. I wish that kind of unity for our country too as we move forward.

7th Annual Texas Veggie Fair returns October 22

The annual Texas Veggie Fair is one of our favorite fall festivals. The annual event returns to Reverchon Park on Saturday October 22. I love it because it doesn't drain my wallet, fill my children up with sugar and give them a bad case of the "Gimme Gimme" as they ogle all the rides and useless soft toys. Texas Veggie Fair is different. It feels more lovey and less grabby. We go and play good old fashion carnival games, eat a few meatless items and then sing kumbaya while giving everyone free hugs. Ok not exactly but vegan singer Erykah Badu did let the kids come on stage with her one year while she was performing. We leave having learned a few things about healthy green living, animal welfare and inspired to cook more with vegetables. This is Texas' largest celebration of all things veggie!

Dîner En Blanc

After weeks of anticipation, the most sought after secret event, Le Dîner en Blanc finally arrived. Pedestrians walking near the Dallas City Hall last Friday evening, stood agape to witness an intriguing scene unfold. Busloads of people clad in pristine white, holding white tables and chairs and baskets of food started arriving at the Dallas City Hall. 2300 people transformed the dull concrete courtyard of the Dallas City Hall into an ethereal procession of picnicking angels. Welcome to the second Annual Le Dîner en Blanc!

Pretty Pantone trend for Mother’s Day Gifts

Thanks to Pantone, the latest color trend evokes tranquility which is perfect for Mother's Day gifts. The Pantone Color Institute's announcement of not one but two colors for their Pantone Color of the Year was unprecedented this year. The harmonious pairing of two complimentary colors Serenity and Rose Quartz makes for the prettiest color trend for 2016. Serenity, a soft blue representing the weightlessness and calming qualities of the sky; and Rose Quartz, a gentle tone that conveys compassion and a sense of composure. My full article appears in the Dallas Morning News this week with Pantone Color of the Year themed gift ideas from many of my favorite places in Dallas. But here's a gallery below to get inspired and add a little zen and bliss in Mother's Day gifts!

Focusing on the important

Last winter my family escaped the cold for a glorious tropical break in Malaysia. We flew in for an extended family reunion. Everybody attended, all except that is, my sweet father who had passed away earlier that year. I spent 2015 walking about like a big open wound. Last year was a year of coping for me. Every 'firsts' like his birthday, wedding anniversary, Father's Day and so forth gutted me. 2015 was the year where I distilled further on what matters to me most in life. As we go into a new year, I'm reminded of the wise words of Dr Seuss, "Sometimes you will never know the true value of a moment until it becomes a memory." Focusing on the important for 2016 is a top priority for me.

A Tale of Tacolandia

Once a upon a time, in a not too distant land, Taco Gods convened in a secret council pow wow. "The people of Dallas are loyal followers. They love our tacos" said Urban Taco, one of the council members. "Yes! Yes!" they all shouted in agreement. "We must reward them," Velvet Taco said. "For one day only, let us show our thanks by giving them unlimited tacos to gorge upon," declared Fuzzy's. Yes, folks! Dallas Observer's Tacolandia is going to make your wishes come true. But like all fairy tales, it ends after a few magical hours. Here is how you can join in the tacolicious event on Saturday October 17th, 2015 and score two complimentary tickets to the Tacolandia love fest.
