Plano Getaway

Is it my imagination or has the City of Plano mushroomed with activity in the last few years? We find ourselves driving the thirty minutes out regularly to visit festivals, grab a bite to eat or hang out at my favorite spa. Recently, we partnered with Visit Plano for a staycation to get a glimpse of what else Plano has to offer. We found a New York Loft hotel, wine-country inspired cuisine, artisan stores and Prairie-land trails for hiking. What a treat Plano is for a short getaway!

My New Year’s Resolution is all about rekindling my relationship with my first husband

"You know, I'm her third husband," I heard my husband joke with my mother last summer when she was visiting. "Third husband?" my mother queried, raising an eyebrow. At first I thought he meant because we got married three times: first was the Vegas wedding when we moved to the US, then went home to Australia for a 'proper' wedding with the formal dress and then to Malaysia for my extended family. "First comes the children, then her writing and then me," he continued. Everyone laughed but I took the statement to heart and started delving deeper into why my sweet, sweet FIRST husband felt this way. Do you ever wonder, what happened to "US" after the kids come?

Why I’m giving my kids their old Christmas toys for Christmas…

This year, my kids are getting a TON of presents under the Christmas tree. I'm so excited, just look at the great big pile! There's 8 Nerf Guns (because one for each child just isn't enough), two Sphero SPRK + STEAM education robots (yep... one for each of the older boys), Lego Mindstorms (because my oldest has been pining and asking for this since he was 4 years old), a rock tumbler and crystal growing set (for my budding geologist/gemologist), Circuit Scribe Kit (for my budding engineer), Pokemon cards (about 600 of them total but who is counting) and Basketball cards (just shy of 300 cards I believe). I can't wait to see their surprised little faces when they open them all up and find that these are their old Christmas toys from previous years.

Chooze Pop Up Shop for holiday shopping

America you have chosen! I won't comment on political views but I'm so relieved the election is finally over. I'm done with choosing one over another and am happy instead to announce that Chooze is back with a pop up store for holiday shopping! For those who don't know, you don't have to choose sides with Chooze shoes. The right shoe is harmoniously different from the left shoe but both are united in step and design. I wish that kind of unity for our country too as we move forward.

5 things I learned from having a thymoma tumor

You may have noticed a lull in posts over the past summer. It wasn't because we were busy with kids and vacation. I wish so much that was the case. In fact we had just planned a 2 month journey through Asia for a trip of a lifetime. Instead, the doctors found a thymoma tumor in my chest cavity. It was "the size of an orange", my doctor described. And just like that my life was never the same again.

Red Rooster Cookbook by Marcus Samuelsson

New York City is full of exciting boroughs, each with it's flavor and diversity and Harlem is no exception. The large neighborhood located on the north end of Manhattan, Harlem boasts a vibrant history and is rich in music, arts and culinary culture. When chef Marcus Samuelsson opened Red Rooster on Harlem’s Lenox Avenue, he envisioned so much more than just a restaurant. He wanted to create a gathering place at the heart of his adopted neighborhood, where both the uptown and downtown sets could see and be seen, mingle and meet – and so he did, in a big way. In conjunction with Samuelsson's long awaited release of The Red Rooster Cookbook, Macy's Culinary Council will be hosting a cooking event. Find out how to get your free copy of The Red Rooster Cookbook and have it signed by Samuelsson.

7th Annual Texas Veggie Fair returns October 22

The annual Texas Veggie Fair is one of our favorite fall festivals. The annual event returns to Reverchon Park on Saturday October 22. I love it because it doesn't drain my wallet, fill my children up with sugar and give them a bad case of the "Gimme Gimme" as they ogle all the rides and useless soft toys. Texas Veggie Fair is different. It feels more lovey and less grabby. We go and play good old fashion carnival games, eat a few meatless items and then sing kumbaya while giving everyone free hugs. Ok not exactly but vegan singer Erykah Badu did let the kids come on stage with her one year while she was performing. We leave having learned a few things about healthy green living, animal welfare and inspired to cook more with vegetables. This is Texas' largest celebration of all things veggie!

Dîner En Blanc

After weeks of anticipation, the most sought after secret event, Le Dîner en Blanc finally arrived. Pedestrians walking near the Dallas City Hall last Friday evening, stood agape to witness an intriguing scene unfold. Busloads of people clad in pristine white, holding white tables and chairs and baskets of food started arriving at the Dallas City Hall. 2300 people transformed the dull concrete courtyard of the Dallas City Hall into an ethereal procession of picnicking angels. Welcome to the second Annual Le Dîner en Blanc!

Where to eat in Fort Worth with kids

It's no secret that Fort Worth is one of our favorite quick getaway spots for a long weekend (check out this downtown Fort Worth hotel we stayed at). The more we go,we love Fort Worth. And it always surprises us that it's a short thirty minute drive from Dallas. The burgeoning restaurant scene leaves us yearning for the next visit. To make the most of our getaway, we sandwich in a brunch and an early dinner with a trip to a museum. We've snooped about and listed some of our favorite kid-friendly eateries in Fort Worth:

DoorDash helps families do the legwork at meal times

Happy Birthday DoorDash! The food delivery service turns one in Dallas and is now expanding into areas like Fort Worth and Arlington. Recently DoorDash invited IttyBittyFoodies to try their service and we jumped up and down at the thought of having a hot meal all prepared for us. If your household is anything like mine, the time leading up to family meal times are always a little like driving in Asia on the wrong side of the road without a road map for us. Three rambunctious boys turn into Gremlins around 4pm and somehow we muddle through to get dinner on the table. It's one of the reasons why IttyBittyFoodies recipes are designed to get you in and out of the kitchen in thirty minutes or less. However, our first DoorDash experience did not go as expected. For full disclosure, DoorDash provided us with a meal up to $50, all opinions are my own (as always) so read on to see hear this tale of two DoorDash deliveries.

The Strawberry Shortcake I never knew

Summer is here and it's time to celebrate America's favorite summertime dessert -- the strawberry shortcake. June 14th is National Strawberry Shortcake Day. But for a girl who grew up in Australia without this iconic American dessert, I don't have a point of reference for strawberry shortcake, except maybe images of a doll my sister used to play with. Our IttyBittyFoodies boys are Americans so we're adding strawberry shortcake to our list of American traditions (see Macy's Culinary Council's Strawberry Shortcake with Slow Roasted Strawberries and Chantilly Cream below). To kick off our summer plans, we'll be zipping off to Union Square in San Francisco this June 14th for Macy's American Icons event to celebrate National Strawberry Shortcake Day!

Pretty Pantone trend for Mother’s Day Gifts

Thanks to Pantone, the latest color trend evokes tranquility which is perfect for Mother's Day gifts. The Pantone Color Institute's announcement of not one but two colors for their Pantone Color of the Year was unprecedented this year. The harmonious pairing of two complimentary colors Serenity and Rose Quartz makes for the prettiest color trend for 2016. Serenity, a soft blue representing the weightlessness and calming qualities of the sky; and Rose Quartz, a gentle tone that conveys compassion and a sense of composure. My full article appears in the Dallas Morning News this week with Pantone Color of the Year themed gift ideas from many of my favorite places in Dallas. But here's a gallery below to get inspired and add a little zen and bliss in Mother's Day gifts!

Omni Fort Worth Hotel for a quick family getaway

Fort Worth has the reputation for being all about cowboys and honky-tonk but our recent trip has let us discover so much more to 'Cowtown'. Aside from the obligatory visit to take out-of-towners to see cowboys (as in real ones not the football team) at the Fort Worth Stockyards and two stepping at Billy Bob's, Itty Bitty Foodies' visits to Fort Worth have been sporadic. Sometimes we time a day trip to Fort Worth to see one of the art exhibitions from the stellar Cultural District which boasts the Kimbell Art Museum and The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. But lately, the "country and western yee haw factor" has developed a hipster twang making Fort Worth, a little Austin-esque with their laid back attitude but without the terrible traffic. Just less than an hour's drive away from Dallas, the Omni Hotel Fort Worth makes for an almost instant getaway and for those afflicted with spring fever, Omni Hotel Fort Worth throws in a picnic at the Fort Worth Botanic Gardens with one of the seasonal packages.

How to cook barramundi

Today we are celebrating #Barramunday! You know the feeling you get when you see something from your childhood and how excited that makes you feel? That's how we felt when we spotted barramundi, a fish we used to eat as we were growing up in Australia. We bought some barramundi to share a bit of our Australian heritage with our Texan-born boys. Barramundi is known as Australia's seabass. It is a white, flaky fish that bears well with different cooking methods. You can steam it with a little lemon and butter or pan fry and roast it if you like crispy skin or simply grill. It eats low in the food chain and is high in Omega 3 content. Back in the day, I remembered how expensive the wild-caught fish was. My family would pay $50-70 for a whole fish at restaurants. But now, Australis is farming it, making it more affordable and sustainable. I recently paid $9.99 a lb from Whole Foods.

Dining at The Ravens: vegan recipes

Whoah! Have the Itty Bitty Foodies turned vegan you ask? No not at all but we jump at the chance of finding new ways to become healthier. When we were invited, along with a few select food bloggers to host the Dining at the Ravens blog tour, we enthusiastically raised our hands! The new vegan recipe book, "Dining at the Ravens" by Jeff and Joan Stanford was an exciting discovery. As we flipped through the first few pages, we discovered that the Stanfords owned a unique vegan eco-inn in Mendocino, California called the Stanford by the Sea. It is the perfect family hideaway for those who want to unplug from the world and just smell (and eat) the flowers. "We think of ourselves as a garden with an inn, rather than an inn with a garden," quotes the Stanfords in their book. The organic farm sanctuary is what we call a magical kingdom on ten acres lush with organic produce, herbs and edible flowers for the inn's gourmet vegan restaurant, named The Ravens.
